We understand that starting in a new setting can be worrying for both caregivers and for children.

Here are some tips to help it go a little smoother.

Before They Start

  • Talk positively about nursery and what they can expect.
  • Read books about starting school.
  • Visit the setting beforehand if possible.
  • Practice short separations with trusted family members or caregivers.
  • Establish a consistent morning routine.

When Dropping Off

  • Keep goodbyes short, calm, and predictable.
  • Create a simple goodbye ritual (a hug, high-five, special phrase, etc.).
  • Reassure your child that you will return and be specific (“I’ll pick you up after lunch”).
  • Avoid sneaking away, as this can increase anxiety and reduce trust.

During the First Few Weeks

  • Expect some tears—they are a normal part of adjustment for many children.
  • Be consistent with attendance when possible.
  • Ask teachers how your child settles after you leave; many children calm down quickly.
  • Celebrate small successes, such as staying for the whole session or making a new friend.

For Parents

  • Stay confident and positive, even if you feel emotional.
  • Trust the preschool staff’s experience with helping children settle in.
  • Avoid lengthy negotiations at the classroom door.

Pro Tip!

  • Send a familiar item such as a small soft toy, or comfort blanket. – Label all belongings clearly!
